Distance changes everything about a job: how fast someone can get to you, whether they will come back to fix a problem, and what they charge for the trip. Search by your city and narrow the results to a radius you would be comfortable with, then work from that shortlist instead of a national directory.

Comparing quotes only works when they answer the same questions. Before you talk price, ask each provider:

A good listing shows real photos of real work, describes what the provider does in plain language, and gives you a direct way to get in touch. A listing with one stock photo and two lines of text is not a scam by itself, but it gives you nothing to judge.

Message the provider through the listing so the scope, the timeline, and the price stay in one thread you can scroll back through. When a job runs long or a detail is disputed, that thread is the only record either of you has.
